Why am I doing what I’m doing?

At eight years old, I would watch my grandfather, an ophthalmologist. He was always helping others. People appreciated him and what he did for them. I knew I wanted to help others. I just had to figure out how. (I love to help with what’s inside, but once it comes out…you’re on your own.)

I also figured out at this age that I had a gift for making people laugh, particularly at the dinner table.

Fast forward ten years, I was watching Zig Ziglar at a seminar in St. Louis and he had the same affect on people as my grandfather. What a cool job – to speak in front of people AND help them out. No blood, no fuss! I also figured out I had a gift for making large groups laugh.

They shared a common philosophy – my grandfather and Zig Ziglar; you can get whatever you want in life by helping others.

I wondered as a kid, what are MY talents? Some kids knew them right away; I took a little longer to figure out what I loved to do. I also struggled with self-esteem.

Age 28 – I noticed wherever I worked people had self-esteem issues. If I could help others with their self-esteem by figuring out their strengths I would really help people be happier and more productive in their lives. I also figured out I had a knack for persuading others.

Age 38 – It took me almost thirty years from those first experiences to put together Embrace Your Freakness. It came together when I met a third person who shared the same philosophy. I was at the right place in life to be open to his message. I listened, I learned, I changed, and I grew.

Now it is my turn to pay it forward. To leave people better than I found them. To teach the lessons of Gramps, Zig, and Patch.

In my pursuit of always helping people, I have recently earned the Certified Speaking Professional designation from the National Speakers Association.

Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) is the highest earned designation presented by the National Speakers Association. This designation is earned by professional speakers who demonstrate competence in a combination of standards: platform skills, business management, education, and professional association. Fewer than 7% of the professional speakers in the world have earned this designation.
